The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 146.42 points, or 0.28%, to 52,361.58 on Monday, CNBC reported. In that close, the S&P 500 gained 0.70% to 7,676.77 and the Nasdaq Composite rose 0.82% to 26,169.38.
CNBC said semiconductor makers rallied after Anthropic publicly filed for an initial public offering. In a preliminary prospectus filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Anthropic, PBC, said it has applied to list Class A common stock on the Nasdaq Global Select Market under the symbol ANT. The cover leaves the price range and the number of shares blank. This article does not estimate what those shares might be worth.
CNBC said the iShares Semiconductor ETF rose nearly 3% on the day. It said Nvidia climbed 2.4%, Micron increased 3%, Broadcom rose 2.3%, and Advanced Micro Devices jumped 2.8%. The same report said the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq were coming off back-to-back weekly losses, and that the semiconductor ETF was roughly 25% below its high and down 13% this month. Those are CNBC’s descriptions of the session, not a view on whether any of those shares should be owned.
Jay Woods, chief market strategist at Freedom Capital Markets, told CNBC the filing was a confidence booster and that he anticipated demand because people had been waiting for the offering. That is his comment. It is not a forecast from this article.
CNBC said 163 companies in the S&P 500 are set to report third-quarter results this week, including Alphabet, Amazon and Microsoft. It also said traders are waiting for the Federal Reserve’s decision on Wednesday, and that fed-funds futures trading suggested about a 90% likelihood policymakers would hold the target range at 3.75% to 4%. That figure is CNBC’s reading of futures prices. It is not a prediction of the vote. The committee has not published a statement for the meeting on Oct. 27–28. The range still on the books is the one from Sept. 16, when the Fed raised the target by a quarter point to 3-3/4 to 4 percent.
Oil moved the other way. Reuters reported that Brent crude futures finished down 91 cents, or 0.8%, at $115.81 a barrel. A lower or higher close is a market result, not a judgment on what should be owned.
